Close, But Not Quite.

June 9, 2009

FlutophoneToday in my 3rd grade Summer School class, my students had their first flutophone lesson. I taught them the parts of the flutophone, and we reviewed them together. “Mouthpiece, tone holes, bell…”

When I pointed at the tone holes once more, one girl proudly shouted, “toenails!”

It was a wrong answer I will not soon forget.

  1. Hilarious. I love the things that come out of kids’ mouths.

I’ve enjoyed reading your recent blog posts. Many of them have been great reminders, others (like this) certainly brought a smile to my face.

    Keep up the great work!

A follow-up, and no, I’m not making this up. The other day:

Me: “How long is a whole note?”
    Student: “About an hour.”

You taught at Longfellow Elementary school, right? You taught me flute your first two years there, and my twin Vanessa the saxophone. We both still play, did marching band all four years of high school. I just graduated, and I’m majoring in music now. Haha, I know you probably don’t remember me, but just wanted to say thanks for getting teaching us :)

    Hi Jazz,

So good to hear from you. Of course I remember you two! I will always remember your line about being “identical cousins.”

Thanks for the update. How awesome to hear the you will major in music. Keep me posted on how things go.

    Steve
